Jeri Ryan, faces the unthinkable in her latest movie, "Against The Wild 2: Survive the Serengeti", when her two children go missing in the African Bush after their small plane crashes. For Ryan, a mother in real life of an 8 year old daughter, the movie provided her the perfect opportunity to be part of a family movie that the whole family could enjoy.
Q: What drew you to this role?
Jeri Ryan: The first and most appealing part of it was that it was aimed at kids, because I’ve never done anything in my career that was truly a family film. My daughter is now eight, and the prospect of doing anything that was aimed at her and her age group was very appealing.
Q: Did you draw on any of your personal motherhood experiences to prepare for the role?
Jeri Ryan: Of course, as a parent you are sort of perpetually terrified. You are never not worried about your kids. So it was easy to tap into those emotions for this role. I remember when we were on set, filming the scene where they tell me the plane had gone down and they don’t know where the kids are, the other actor, between takes, asked me how I was able to cry so quickly, and I told him it was because I am a mom.
Q: As a mom what’s the one piece of advice you always give your daughter?
Jeri Ryan: The advice I give my daughter is to just be kind, and she truly is. She makes me want to be a better person. She is an amazing person, not just a sweet kid but also an amazing person. We should all be more like her.
Q: Did you daughter get to come over to the set during filming?
Jeri Ryan: She didn’t, unfortunately it was in the middle of the school year so she couldn’t come, but hopefully will get to go back sometime because it was the most magical place.
Q: This movie was shot entirely in Africa, what was that experience like?
Jeri Ryan: It is someplace I’ve always wanted to go and visit, and we were staying and shooting on the wildlife preserve so on my morning drives to set we were driving like 1 or 2MPH because there would be three or four giraffes in the middle of the road, so we would just pull over and watch these majestic creatures. It was truly amazing.
Q: There is a great picture of you with a zebra on set, tell us about the Zebra?
Jeri Ryan: OMG! Zack the Zebra! Zack was the most amazing! Anytime there were cameras there, there was Zack and he was usually hanging out right beside the director. He was fascinated with all the cameras and the whole thing!
Q: You worked with animals in this movie, but in your own life you are also an animal lover, what kind of pets do you currently have?
Jeri Ryan: We’ve always had dogs and cats. Right now we have year a half old cat, and we just adore him. We also have an adult St. Bernard who we just rescued, named Lucy; she is enormous, enormous, but so gentle. It’s the first big dog I’ve had, and I’ve always been slightly afraid of big dogs, but this is the first dog of any size where I was comfortable from the day we brought her home. I was comfortable with my daughter putting her face right up to her she is just so gentle. She was rescued from the streets of Tijuana, and you can tell that she is grateful and that she knows we’ve given her a home and she couldn’t be more loving.
Q: What is one scene that stood out in your mind from the movie?
Jeri Ryan: One scene that was so striking, because it was so beautiful, it was jaw dropping gorgeous, was the final scene, when we were literally riding off into the sunset. I can’t even tell you how gorgeous this was in person. You couldn’t shoot that anywhere else but there.
Q: This is movie for families, why do you think families will enjoy this one?
Jeri Ryan: Because it’s exciting without being terrifying. Kids will love seeing the animals, and how the kids (in the movie) interact with the animals. These are the sort of incredible animals that you dream of. Not just the dog, who is also well trained and amazing, but these are animals we fantasize about, elephants and giraffes, and zebras. It’s so foreign to what we see here unless we are someplace like the zoo, and it’s such a great way to experience that. It’s something the whole family will be able to enjoy the beauty and excitement of.
